All Standards. All Ages. All Music.
WELCOME TO THE STURMINSTER NEWTON ORCHESTRA
The Sturminster Newton Orchestra is a group of musicians of all standards and all ages who meet on Saturday mornings to play a variety of music: folk songs and dances; light classics; music from the shows; extracts from opera; the romantic classics and film music.
ABOUT US
The orchestra was formed in 1990 by a group of friends wanting to create an open and welcoming environment for young people, students and mature musicians of all standards to meet and play in an orchestral environment.
The project was a resounding success - the orchestra now has a nominal membership of over 50 players with average weekly rehearsal attendance of over 40 players! The orchestra incorporates all instruments of a symphony orchestra with a few band instruments to further enhance the group!
COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA
Our aims are to enjoy ourselves making music; to practice instrument technique; to improve sight-reading and musicianship by playing together.
As a rule we do not put ourselves under pressure by giving public performances, but at the end of each term we put on an informal 'open rehearsal/concert' at the Exchange in Sturminster Newton to anyone who wants to come and hear us!
The Sturminster Newton Orchestra is truly open: it doesn’t matter what age you are or what grade you have achieved. There are no auditions and everyone is welcome. Our only requirement is that new players come to at least three rehearsals before playing at the end of term concert.
We welcome new members. Contact us via our website, we'd be pleased to hear from you!
